Diabetic Foot Care in Greenville, NC

Diabetes can affect the nerves, blood flow, and skin of the feet. Over time, reduced sensation and slower healing may raise the risk of sores, infections, and other foot problems. At Foot & Ankle East, PC in Greenville, Dr. William D. Respess, DPM provides thoughtful diabetic foot care focused on prevention, early attention, and clear guidance you can use at home.

Our practice has served patients across Eastern North Carolina since January 2003. We aim to help you understand what to watch for and when to schedule an appointment—without overpromising or using one-size-fits-all advice.

Why diabetic foot care matters

People with diabetes may not feel pain, heat, or pressure the way they once did. A small blister, cut, or area of rubbing from shoes can go unnoticed. Combined with circulation changes, that can make healing more difficult. Regular foot exams and practical daily habits can help catch concerns earlier, when they may be easier to address.

Diabetic foot care is not only for people who already have a sore. Many visits focus on checking skin and nails, reviewing footwear, discussing calluses or dry skin, and answering questions about home care. Prevention and monitoring are central parts of good long-term foot health with diabetes.

What a diabetic foot visit may include

During a visit, Dr. Respess may:

• Examine your skin, nails, and areas of pressure or redness

• Check for signs of nerve or circulation concerns as appropriate

• Review calluses, corns, or other areas that may need professional care

• Discuss shoes, socks, and daily inspection habits

Address nail care needs that may be harder to manage safely at home

• Help you recognize warning signs that deserve prompt attention

Care plans are individualized. What is recommended for one patient may differ from another based on overall health, current foot findings, and your diabetes management.

Everyday habits that can support healthier feet

Between visits, many patients benefit from a simple routine:

• Look at both feet each day, including the bottoms and between the toes

• Wash and dry feet carefully, especially between the toes

• Moisturize dry skin, avoiding lotion between the toes unless advised otherwise

• Wear well-fitting shoes and clean, dry socks

• Avoid walking barefoot indoors or outdoors when possible

• Never try to cut thick calluses or dig out nails at home

If you notice a new sore, drainage, increasing redness, swelling, warmth, foul odor, or fever, contact the office promptly. For severe or rapidly worsening symptoms, seek urgent or emergency care as appropriate—do not wait for a routine appointment if you are concerned about infection or a rapidly changing wound.
