Nail Fungus Treatment in Greenville, NC
Thickened, discolored, or brittle toenails are often linked to a fungal infection (onychomycosis), though other nail conditions can look similar. At Foot & Ankle East, PC in Greenville, Dr. William D. Respess, DPM evaluates concerning nails and discusses approaches that may improve appearance and comfort over time.
Nail fungus can develop gradually. Warm, moist environments—such as sweaty shoes—may encourage fungal growth. Trauma to the nail, shared shower surfaces, and certain health conditions can also play a role. Because not every abnormal nail is fungal, an accurate assessment is an important first step.
What nail fungus may look like
Signs that can suggest a fungal nail problem include:
• Yellow, white, or brown discoloration
• Thickening or crumbling of the nail
• Debris under the nail
Distorted nail shape
• Separation of the nail from the nail bed in some cases
Nails may also become uncomfortable in closed shoes. Nearby skin infections (athlete’s foot) sometimes occur together with nail changes and may be addressed as part of care.
Evaluation at our Greenville office
During your visit, Dr. Respess will examine the nails and surrounding skin and review your history. In some cases, laboratory testing of a nail sample may be considered to help confirm a fungal diagnosis before starting certain treatments. That decision depends on clinical findings and the options being discussed.
Treatment options that may be considered
Nail fungus can be stubborn. Improvement, when it occurs, often takes months because nails grow slowly. Depending on your health, the extent of involvement, and your goals, discussion may include:
• Topical medicines applied to the nail and surrounding area
• Oral antifungal medication when appropriate and medically suitable
Professional nail trimming or debridement to reduce thickness and pressure
• Guidance on shoe and foot hygiene to support healthier nail growth
Not every treatment is right for every person. Oral medicines, for example, may not be appropriate if you have certain medical conditions or take interacting medications. Dr. Respess will help you understand potential benefits, limitations, and follow-up needs. Complete clearing is not guaranteed for every nail.
Practical steps that may support healthier nails
Between visits, many patients find it helpful to:
• Keep feet clean and dry
• Wear breathable shoes and change socks when damp
• Avoid sharing nail clippers or footwear
• Trim nails carefully and straight across when possible
• Treat athlete’s foot promptly if it develops
If you have diabetes, poor circulation, or difficulty seeing or reaching your feet, professional nail care is especially important—do not attempt aggressive home treatment of thick or painful nails.
